More levels of address hierarchy

• Remember hierarchical division of IP address into network part and host part

• Similarly, we can group several networks into a larger block, or divide a large block into several smaller blocks

  • arbitrary number of levels of hierarchy
  • blocks don’t all need to be the same size

• Old systems used more restrictive rules

  • New rules are “classless”
  • Old style used Class A, B, C networks
